Getting around Foshan during a buying trip

Foshan is a large city with good public transport and heavy traffic at the usual times. Moving around it is straightforward. Moving efficiently around the furniture district specifically is the part that repays a little planning.

The metro

The network has grown a great deal and it is clean, cheap and easy to use, with English on signage and announcements. Two lines matter most to a visiting buyer.

The Guangfo line connects Foshan directly to Guangzhou, which makes travelling between the two cities simple and removes any need to sit in cross city traffic.

Line 3, which opened at the end of 2022, runs south east through the city and serves the Lecong area, so the furniture district is now on the metro network in a way it was not for many years. One caution: the furniture strip runs for several kilometres, so check the closest station for the specific centre you are heading to rather than assuming one stop serves the whole district.

Taxis and ride hailing

Both work well. Ride hailing through the usual Chinese apps is widely used and removes the language friction of explaining a destination, since you set it on the map.

Two practical notes. Have your destination saved in Chinese characters, because a translated name is not always enough. And expect that a pickup from inside a very large furniture centre may take a few minutes to coordinate, since the buildings have several entrances that all look alike from a car park.

A car for the day

For an actual buying day this is the normal arrangement and it is worth understanding why, because it looks like an indulgence and is not.

The centres are far apart. You will accumulate catalogues, fabric samples and finish chips through the day. Waiting for a car between each of four or five stops costs perhaps an hour across a day, and it costs more than that in the decision you make at four in the afternoon when you are tired and carrying things and the next building is fifteen minutes away.

Having transport waiting changes the day: samples live in the boot, transitions take minutes, and you stop rationing your stops.

Payment

Mobile payment is used essentially everywhere, including taxis and small restaurants. Setting it up before you travel is far easier than arranging it on arrival, and it removes a daily source of friction.

Timing your day

Showrooms generally open mid morning and begin closing early evening, so the genuinely productive window is narrower than a normal working day. Traffic is heavier at the start and end of it. The practical shape of a good day is a relaxed start, a full middle, and no attempt to squeeze a fifth centre in at six o’clock.

Between Foshan and Guangzhou

If your trip includes a fair at Pazhou, plan the cross city move deliberately rather than treating it as a short hop. The metro is reliable and predictable. A car during a fair week, when everybody else is also travelling, is less so.
