The best time of year to visit Foshan for furniture

The answer depends entirely on what you want from the trip. A buyer who wants to see everything new should travel at a completely different time from a buyer who wants an unhurried negotiation.

March: the furniture fair month

The large international furniture fair in Guangzhou runs in March at the Pazhou complex, in two phases about a week apart. The first covers home furniture and related categories, the second commercial and office furniture along with materials.

Many Foshan showrooms refresh their displays around the same period, so the whole region is showing its newest work. If your priority is seeing what is new, this is the month.

The trade off is real: accommodation tightens across both cities, prices rise, everything is busier, and suppliers are stretched thin. It is the best month for looking and among the harder months for a slow, detailed conversation.

Late April and late October: the Canton Fair weeks

The Canton Fair holds a session heavy with furniture, houseware and gifts in late April and again in late October at the same complex. Similar dynamics to March: more to see, more people, more pressure on hotels.

These weeks suit buyers combining several categories in one trip, since the fair covers far more than furniture.

The quiet months

Outside those periods, the district is calmer and that has genuine advantages. Showroom staff have time. You get longer, more detailed conversations. Factory visits are easier to arrange because workshops are not flat out preparing collections. Hotels are cheaper and easier.

For a first trip, where the aim is to understand the market and build relationships rather than catalogue what is new, a quiet month is often the better choice, and it is the opposite of what most people assume.

Chinese New Year

The one period to plan around carefully. The date moves each year, falling somewhere between late January and mid February. Production pauses around it and takes time to return to full speed afterwards.

The weeks before are extremely busy as everyone tries to finish orders, and the weeks after run slower. Travelling then is possible but the district is quiet in an unhelpful way, and an order placed close to it needs real contingency. Check the date for your year before fixing anything.

The weather

Guangdong is subtropical. Summer is hot and very humid, with heavy rain and the possibility of typhoon disruption to travel. Autumn, roughly October and November, is the most comfortable time to be here: warm, drier and pleasant for the amount of walking a buying trip involves.

Winter is mild and comfortable by most standards. Spring is warm and increasingly humid as it goes on.
