Hardware: the cheapest upgrade you can make
A wardrobe is judged by how its doors close. Two dollars a hinge separates furniture that feels expensive from furniture that feels like a photograph of expensive furniture.
Buyers spend an hour choosing a finish and thirty seconds on hardware, which is exactly backwards. The finish is what sells the piece in a photograph; the hardware is what makes the customer feel they chose well every day for five years.

Hinges
Concealed European-style hinges dominate. The differences are in the cup material, the steel thickness, the plating, the adjustment mechanism and the soft-close damper.
Good hinges have a stamped or cast body with even nickel plating, a smooth cam adjustment in three axes, and a damper integrated into the arm rather than an add-on clipped to the door. Cheap hinges have thin, springy steel, plating that shows tooling marks, and dampers that lose their action within a year or two.
The recognised names — the large Austrian, German, Italian and Chinese manufacturers — appear on the hinge itself. Look for a logo stamped into the metal. An unbranded hinge is not automatically bad, but it is unverifiable, and on a wardrobe with twelve of them the difference in total cost between unbranded and branded is often under fifteen dollars.
Drawer slides
Three types cover almost everything. Roller slides are the cheapest, partial extension, and they rattle. Ball-bearing slides are full extension, smooth and the sensible default. Undermount slides are hidden beneath the drawer, usually with soft-close, and give the cleanest look on quality case goods.
Specify the load rating — 25 to 45 kg covers most furniture — and the extension type. Then open a drawer fully in the showroom, load it with your bag, and open it again. Slides fail under load, not empty, and a slide that binds with weight in it will be a warranty claim.
Undermount slides are unforgiving of loose tolerances. If a factory cannot hold precise drawer box dimensions, ball-bearing side slides are the better and more reliable specification.
Gas lifts, runners and the rest
Gas lifts on ottoman beds and storage benches are rated by newtons, and the rating must match the lid weight. Too weak and the lid falls; too strong and it will not stay shut. Ask for the rating and test it with the actual lid.
Bed frame fittings, cam locks, dowels and connecting bolts are where flat-pack furniture is won or lost. Zinc alloy cam locks with steel bolts are correct; plastic connectors in a bed frame are not.
Levelling feet and glides matter more than they sound. Adjustable feet on a wardrobe or a cabinet let it stand straight on an uneven floor, which is the difference between doors that align and doors that do not.
The showroom test sequence
Open and close a door twenty times. Listen for a change in sound and feel for the hinge going slack.
Pull a drawer out fully and push down on the front edge. A good slide takes it; a poor one drops and scrapes.
Look at the screws holding the hardware. Coarse chipboard screws driven into MDF strip out; hardware fixed with proper machine screws into inserts, or with correct-diameter screws into pre-drilled pilot holes, stays fixed.
Then turn the piece around and look at the back. Hardware quality is consistent within a factory — good hinges and stapled backs rarely coexist.
The specification line, and the arithmetic
All hinges: [brand] concealed, soft-close, three-way adjustable, nickel-plated. All drawers: [brand] full-extension ball-bearing slides, 35 kg rating, soft-close. Cam fittings: zinc alloy with steel bolts. Adjustable levelling feet on all case goods.
On a container of case goods this upgrade typically adds one to three per cent to the factory cost. It reduces returns, it is immediately obvious to a customer in a showroom, and it is the single most cost-effective way to make Chinese furniture feel like a considered product rather than a cheap one.
